Google thinks they knows who you are →
We all know that Google targets ads to each of us based on how we browse the web, but it’s interesting to have them spell out the knowledge they have on you. They put up this page that will tell you some demographics and trends they have derived about you. The ones, in fact, that they use to target those ads to you. Check it out!
I’m (apparently) a 35-44 year old male who’s...

airbnb
Has anyone tried this new airbnb thing? People rent out there rooms to travellers passing through. Seems to be much cheaper and more authentic than hotels, and a bit more comfortable than some CouchSurfing situations might leave you. I think I’m going to try it. Just signed up for my account - link me up! This link will get you $25 off your first stay:...

“The great omission in American life is solitude; not loneliness, for this is an alienation that thrives most in the midst of crowds, but that zone of time and space, free from the outside pressures, which is the incubator of the spirit.” -Marya Mannes
Merry Christmas everyone. May you find some solitude on your holidays.

Occupy
I’m amazed by how many people are still clueless about the Occupy movement. On Wall Street, it started September 17th. But it spread, and is still spreading. In Canada, it starte October 15th (the Day of Action). The movement has many different faces, each attacking different local issues.
I have strong opinions on this and how authorities and media are dealing with it, but I will keep...

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having...

One of those (long) days...
Breathe. Don’t get worked up cause that’s not going to help the situation. Just take a deep breath, let things be, and move on.
I’ve had to remind myself of this a few times in the past couple of days. The journey from Siem Reap to Yogyakarta has had a few hiccups.
It all started with a friendly tuk tuk driver. The night before leaving Siem Reap I was walking back to my...

The first leg.
Greetings everyone!
First off thanks to everyone who filled my inbox with birthday wishes, it really means a lot to me. It also reminded me that I promised I wouldn’t just drop off the face of the earth during my travels, so i’m being productive on this 7 hr jaunt back to Bangkok and am writing this.
Hmm where to start…the beginning seems as good a place as any I suppose.

Accept everything about yourself - I mean everything. You are you and that is...
– I found a crumpled piece of paper when I was cleaning the hot room at Moksha a couple months back, and it had this written on it. It was a message I needed to hear at the time. I stumbled upon it again when I was cleaning off my desk today and thought: why not pass it along for the next person...

Happy Holidays Everyone
Christmas snuck up on me this year, like a ninja in snow camo. I sort of bucked corporate Christmas this year and didn’t buy much, the potlucks all felt more like just parties (good times with good friends, they just didn’t feel like Christmas persay), and I Worked right up ‘til Christmas eve… This season has frustrated me a lot in the past couple of years because I have...
Work Bio
This week I had to put together a short bio for my job - it will appear in the “about us” part of our apps. I hate writing about myself in the third person so I asked around the office for some suggestions. This one pretty much made my day:
David Quiring graduated with the University of Manitoba with a Bachelors degree in Computer Science. His focuses included software...

Experimenting with uploading video…
So I was messing around with uploading HD video to some online sources yesterday and am curious as to how other people are doing it. It seems that both Vimeo and Youtube rerender your video after you upload it using their own specific codec/criteria/?. I rendered the footage into h264 using AfterEffects. A quick glance at home and the uploaded stuff...
lost in the practice..
Be mindful daily.
You will be surprised at the positive change this can bring to life.
Nikon D7000 Impressions.
Disclaimer: I am not a pixel peeper and these are just my observations from practical use. So I finally upgraded from my old Nikon D200. With the Nikon D7000, Nikon has (finally) put out a camera with a few features that I’ve been aching for: namely 1080p 24fps video w/ external mic input and manual controls (I know…not a feature for all but it’s a big deal for me). The high...

Wow - I found this cool apartment hunting site today. You can simply browse the map and click on places for rent (pulled in from Kijiji, Craigslist, and who-else-knows-where). It’s got history price comparisons and stuff too. I have a feeling this will come in handy one day!

Self-discovery feels so good.
Lately I’ve been rediscovering and discovering so much about myself. After having my heart kicked in the ass early this year I was left hollow. Blah blah blah…no I’m not complaining it’s just a fact at this point. I’m over it now and am so much the better for it. But the fact of it is that at that point myself was intertwined with herself - and when that...

Wanderlust
Mother earth is so ruggedly beautiful. I’m itching to explore her nooks and crannies, stand on her mountain tops, wander along her ocean pathways, and set sail to new places I’ve never heard of before…
I also want to go snowboarding, bad! This flick is the “Planet Earth” of snowboarding. Love.
Let it snow… Happy Monday.
Weekend Update
Do you ever acquire lucidity in the middle of a dream and are convinced, even for but just a moment, that what you’re experiencing is reality? With this perception that this is a reality you experience everything as if it were real…but then as your mind analyzes the self-constructed reality you start to get this feeling that something’s a little off. You then question if...

It’s been a while since I’ve posted on here. Sorry to all my long distance friends I haven’t been in touch with lately, life has been a bit hectic lately and I just haven’t been feeling like being on a computer when precious downtime does come up. What’s been keeping me busy? the day job at the Canadian Network for Public Health Intelligence, volunteering at Moksha...

“The emotions that are evoked when you see images of people climbing snowy mountainsides is un-explainable. It is crazy how ones hairs stands up on your arms when you see a person standing on top a white desolate cliff ready to drop in and ride for their life. It is a very spiritual moment when you are physically alone on a mountain yet you feel whole.”

Help-portrait Winnipeg - August 7th, 2010
“Help-portrait is a movement of photographers who are using their time, equipment, and expertise to give back to those who are less fortunate.”
On August 7th some friends and I organized a help-portrait here in Winnipeg. My little group of great people set up at a greenhouse celebration put on by the Spence Neighbourhood Association - their garden did great this year and there was...
